The Diploma of Screen and Media is the most current qualification of Specialist Make-Up Services. This diploma is the perfect fit for anyone interested in exploring all avenues of the make-up industry! You will learn what it takes to work on film, TV and theatre, SPFX skills including prosthetic creation and application, editorial and bridal make-up techniques and hairstyling. ITECThe Australian Institute of Creative Design is ITEC approved, this means that our Diploma of Screen & Media (specialised make-up) course has also been developed to the international qualification standards of ITEC and from this students will gain a dual qualification (National and International). Recently, some of our students had the extraordinary opportunity to work on set for the recently released "Thor: Ragnarok" movie. The team, led by Jodie Watkins, our education program manager, secretly worked behind the scenes on special effects make-up for various actors in the movie over six amazing weeks. In 2016 students also worked on the smash hit “KONG: Skull Island” movie as well!


The wide range of courses offered at the college allows students to collaborate and connect with students from various departments including; styling, fashion design and photography. These self-directed collaborations foster amazing networking capabilities for students, allowing them to create incredible images for their portfolios and preparing them for industry. In previous years our students have had the opportunity to work on of feature films including ‘Kong: Skull Island’ and ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales’.

  • Students will be required to source outside models throughout the duration of the course - models may be needed for consecutive weeks on occasion.
  • Students will be required to have access to a laptop computer with Office capabilities.
  • Students will be required to have access to a digital camera.
  • Students will be required to create full head to toe characters - students may choose to purchase costuming and props.
  • Students will be required to print images and written work for their portfolio submissions.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Do you have 2 or more years industry relevant experience? Have your experience recognised and increase your employment prospects by applying for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). Through RPL you could reduce the duration of your studies. RPL assessed on a case by case basis, so it is only available upon application.

*Students will be charged an administration fee of $200 per unit of competency.

Student Entry Requirements:

Formal Education or Work/Life Experience:

To enrol into the Diploma of Screen and Media the applicant must have sound computer skills to use the internet as a research tool as well as answering yes to most of the questions below:

  • Do you have an interest in make-up and transformation?
  • Are you patient and tactful?
  • Do you have good communication skills?
  • Are you good at practical tasks and have good hand-eye coordination?


There are no prerequisites for entry into this qualification.

Course Fees

VET Student Loans

From the 1st of January 2017 a new government student loan scheme became available to students enrolling into eligible courses at approved providers.

VET Student Loans are available for students who meet the eligibility requirements to assist with payment of the course fees. Students who take out a VET Student Loan will have a HELP debt which is due to the Commonwealth until it is repaid.

Students will be required to have a laptop computer with a wireless network connection. The following specifications are recommended:

  • A Wireless Laptop (PC or MAC)
  • Minimum 8Gb RAM (Preferrably 16GB RAM)
  • 2Ghz or faster processor
  • Web Browser (e.g. Google Chrome, Safari, Firefox or Internet Explorer)
  • Anti Virus Software.
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader (free online)
  • For editing work it is recommended you have a mouse
  • Microsoft Office 2007 or better with Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Access.*
    If using a Mac -> Pages, Numbers and Keynote can be used
  • It is suggested all students have a spare Hard Drive/USB to back up their work

Diploma of Screen and Media is now funded by the Queensland Government

Complete the CUA51015 Diploma of Screen & Media with us! Now offering funding to eligible students.

To be eligible you must:

  • Be a Queensland resident
  • Be an Australian or New Zealand citizen or Australian permanent resident (including humanitarian entrants), or a temporary resident with the necessary visa and work permits on the pathway to permanent residency; and
  • Prospective students must not have or be enrolled in a certificate IV or higher-level qualification, not including qualifications completed at school and foundations skills training.

This means that for eligible students, your out of pockets costs will be reduced and if you are eligible for the VET Student Loan your loan debt will be lower.

As this is a funded course we are also offering concessions to students who aren’t eligible for a funded position under the QUEENSLAND Higher Level Skills program but who are on a concessional health card.

Financial Assistance

We understand that studying can be a big financial commitment. With this in mind, we urge our students to investigate potential financial support they may need throughout the course. Eligible students may be able to apply to Centrelink for either Youth Allowance (for full-time students aged 16 to 24) or Austudy (for full-time students aged 25 years or over). Domestic Students Only

Application and Enrolment Process:

  1. Phone the Gold Coast (07) 55 938 335 OR Brisbane (07) 38 541 395 campus to arrange your interview OR fill out the online Application Form and arrange a phone interview if you cannot come into either campus.
  2. Attend your interview or complete the phone interview.
  3. You will receive your enrolment paperwork and the student handbook at the interview and information on the required evidence you will have to supply to support your application.
  4. After reading the student handbook and enrolment forms, if you wish to enrol you must submit the enrolment form along with any requested evidence (original or certified copies of originals).
  5. Our administration staff will check the completed enrolment form and evidence you supplied to demonstrate your suitability for the course. We may have to ask you further information or discuss your options if you don't meet the suitability requirements for the course. If you do meet the suitability requirements for the course, we will send you a Confirmation of Enrolment, along with payment plan forms.
